My Town

My town, is like your town
A few bewildered denizens of the past
Hover outside the concrete carcasses of the old ways

New Gods are worshipped,
Kelloggs, Andrex and Dettol

Gucci, Prada and Burberry,
Now corpses in fading thoroughfares
Toppled icons

Overlooked by sterile skyscrapers
Whose night lights
Flash SOS into the emptiness
Without reply

The sick gasp for medicine,
The shelves of the healthy groan
Just in case

Mosques, churches and synagogues
Offer no prayers
While the aisles of Morrisons, Tesco and Aldi sing.

My town is like your town
There’s no-one around
